[Connected in some way with(?)] zugos.
*zugiano/s: o( zugo/s.
An "Ambrosian" entry, occurring in Ambrosianus B12 sup. and in Laurentianus 59.16.
Determining what this headword means is even harder than it needed to be because the gloss appears to be faulty, or at least uninformative. The grammatical form of the rare
*zugiano/s (authentically upper case? Adler's practice of capitalizing
all headwords makes it impossible to say) is not that of a word
equivalent with zugo/s; rather, it should be in some way connected with or defined by it. If -- and it is a big if --
zugo/s here is the constellation Libra (see LSJ s.v.
zugo/n IV.b), a
*Zugiano/s could be a person born under it. For this astrological sense see e.g. Basil of
Caesarea,
Homilies on the hexaemeron 6.6 (and ps.-Caesarius,
Quaestiones et responsiones 110, quoting Basil). But note also that the epitome of the
Ethnica of
Stephanus of
Byzantium several times, chiefly s.v. Zugoi, identifies Zugianos as an ethnic term for the Zygoi (or Zygii), an ethnic group that
Strabo 11.2.1-14 (cited by
Stephanus) locates in the eastern Black Sea region. [DW: to be identified, presumably, with the 'Zichoi' of the Barrington Atlas's map 84 grid E4; and the name has survived to the present day as that of the city of Sochi, Russia's largest resort city and venue of the 2014 Winter Olympics.]
