As Blockley notes (286 note 327), it is possible that the Bonus here is the Roman general (568-569/570) in the Balkans under Justin (cf. PLRE IIIa s.v. Iustinus(4)). Bonus had been assigned to guard the Danube frontier against Avar (cf. alpha 18 generally) incursions in 561, when the Scythian battle of the quotation presumably ensued.
