The headword noun is rare but its meaning is seen, plausibly enough, in LSJ s.v. as the opposite of
proedria (
pi 2379,
pi 2381); cf. Gregory of Nazianzus,
Funeral Oration for Basil of Caesarea 27.2 and
Against the Emperor Julian (PG 35 648.29). If so, the present gloss's 'below' needs to be taken figuratively, i.e. of inferior prestige (and in fact, literally, higher up).
