[Meaning] under armpit. The word occurs in the [sc. Attic] orators; and they always deploy it with the preposition; as [for instance] Demosthenes in the [speech] In Reply to Aphobos: "and what is more, not [merely] one or two people know these things, nor was the challenge made under arm but in the middle of the agora with many present".[1] Also Lysias in the [speech] In Reply to Kleinias: "since many were asleep, having equipped himself with as many bronze vessels as possible he took [them] out under arm, with a sword".[2] Thus the singular [is used] with a preposition. Many others also [use] the plural 'armpits', including Lysias in a letter: "and [he had] fine hair but shaggy armpits".[3]
