*qu/skh: h( ska/fh.
The (feminine) headword is unattested outside lexicography, though it is reckoned (e.g. LSJ s.v.) related/identical to
qui+/skh ('censer'), with the root
qu- suggesting some relation to sacrificial ritual. The gloss,
ska/fh, can refer to anything that is dug out (see
sigma 543), such as a bowl, a small boat or a ditch. But cf.
Etymologicum Magnum 458.53, where the present headword is defined more fully as "the
ska/fh that holds the sacrificial offerings," and where
qu/mata ('sacrificial offerings') is almost certainly a mistake for
qumia/mata ('incense'); cf.
Etym.Magn. 458.52, where
qu/skos is similarly defined as a holder for
qumia/mata. See also
Hesychius theta963.
