*qrhnaki/a: h( *sikeli/a.
The headword first appears -- in the form Thrinakie -- in
Homer,
Odyssey 11.107; there it is a legendary island, home of the cattle and sheep of Helios. The identification with
Sicily is later, involving other versions of the name (Trinakria, Trinachia) which reflect
Sicily's triangular shape (
trei=s, a)/krai). See
Strabo 6.2.1,
theta 499, and
tau 993.
