Headword: *qalpth/ria
Adler number: theta,30
Translated headword: comforting, warming
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] making [one] blossom,[1] covering. "These sandals comforting to the feet."[2]
Greek Original:
*qalpth/ria: qa/llein poiou=nta, periske/ponta. sa/ndala me\n ta\ podw=n qalpth/ria tau=ta.
Notes:
[1] cf. under theta 12 for this glossing phrase. The headword itself, neuter plural, is extracted from the quotation given.
[2] Greek Anthology 6.206.1 (Antipater of Sidon); more fully at beta 310. (The headword adjective is not otherwise attested.) On this epigram, a dedication of clothing and personal items to Aphrodite by five young women, see Gow and Page (vol. I, 13); (vol. II, 38-39); and further excerpts at alpha 4004, epsilon 3743, and kappa 1273. Gow and Page observe (vol. II, 38) that the Suda's gloss is misleading; the headword is evidently derived from qa/lpein (to warm, metaphorically to comfort; cf. LSJ s.v.), not qa/llein, to bloom.
