The headword is a contraction, with crasis, of the phrase used here as the gloss. As with analogous entries elsewhere, the gloss therefore does not so much define the word substantively as resolve it into its constituent parts.

The normal Attic spelling represented by the latter appears elsewhere in Aristophanes: Lysistrata 113, Thesmophoriazusae 499, Ecclesiazusae 536 (cf. epsilon 135). Its application to the circuit-wall of Pylos in Messenia (famously captured by the Athenians from the Spartans in 425/4; cf. beta 519, epsilon 1061, epsilon 3348, kappa 1731, etc.) is not attested elsewhere. Its relation to that place at Lysistrata 1162 is made explicit two lines later (1164), in a sexual double entendre on Reconciliation's anus. See generally J.
