Dion was an Alexandrian by birth, and a famous philosopher. He had a brother, called Topsios, who was a wrestler. Jeered at by one of [Topsios'] opponents and having to listen to both acceptable and unacceptable things[1] said about him with a large crowd in attendance, [
Dion] himself made no remark, observing the calm injunction of wisdom; staying inside his own gatehouse and displaying no anger, he said to the young man not even a grunt; and the latter, in despair, hanged himself. The [term] grunt is is said of something small and random. Also [it means] the crud under the nails.
