I, 4) follow the Anthologia Palatina (AP) and the Suda here in reading the farmer's name here, but they note that the AP scribe designated C (the Corrector) and the Anthologia Planudea transmitted e(/lkwn (present active participle of e(/lkw, I draw, drag, pull): thus, perhaps, "pulling [the plow through the fields] did not lead the working ox...to the cleaver". The Corrector's emendation might have been motivated by the rarity of the name Alkon/Alcon in daily life compared to its prominence in epic and classical myth; cf. Gow and Page (vol. II, 4).
