Adler number: tau,381
Translated headword: which had been rated
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Thucydides [writes]: "for [the helots] were running ashore their boats which had been rated in money."[1]
Greek Original:
*tetihme/na: *qoukudi/dhs: e)pw/kellon ga\r ta\ ploi=a tetihme/na xrhma/twn.
Notes:
The transmitted headword, repeated in the quotation as transmitted, is tetihme/na (from teti/hmai; cf. tau 380), but that is an error, and untranslatable in this context. Read tetimhme/na, as translated here.
[1] Thucydides 4.26.7, on events at Pylos in 425 BCE. The point being made in this phrase is that the destruction of the boats (in the process of getting food to the troops marooned on Sphakteria island) was taking place with the prior agreement of the Spartan authorities.
