Name of a people. Also [sc. attested is] a feminine form Tegeste, a name of a city.
*tegestai=oi: o)/noma e)/qnous. kai\ qhluko\n *tege/sth, o)/noma po/lews.
The headword is transmitted as Tegesthaioi in one manuscript. But note
Stephanus of
Byzantium s.v. Tegestra: 'neuter [sic!], a city of
Illyria near
Aquileia... The citizen [of it is a] Tegestraios'. (He mentions an alternative form Tergestron.) And this in turn clearly stems from
Strabo 5.1.9: 'the stronghold
Tergeste, a distance of 180 stades from
Aquileia'.
Tergeste -- the authentic form -- is the present-day
Trieste. See Barrington Atlas map 19 grid F4, map 20 grid A4.
