Headword: *skotodinia=|
Adler number: sigma,677
Translated headword: has a dizzy spell
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] goes faint; a rolling of the eyes with darkness, that is, to suffer vertigo.
Greek Original:
*skotodinia=|: skotou=tai: meta\ sko/tous o)fqalmw=n sustrofh/, o(/ e)stin i)liggia=|n.
Notes:
= Synagoge sigma137; Photius, Lexicon sigma375, where Theodoridis notes an instance of the headword (present indicative, third person singular, of skotodinia/w) in one of the declamations of Aelius Aristides (II 530 D).
For the first gloss alone see already Hesychius sigma1126. The immediately following entry in Hesychius, sigma1127, glosses the aorist participle skotodinia/sas with the phrase meta\ sko/tous o)fqalmw=n sustrafei/s, o(/ e)stin i)liggia/sas, which looks very like the precursor of the one in the other lexica. (Adler noted ms verbal variants for the noun sustrofh/, and Theodoridis prints sustre/fei, albeit obelized.)
For an instance of i)liggia/w see chi 568.
