*ske/ph: para\ *(hrodo/tw| qh/kh, de/rma.
The headword occurs three times in
Herodotus in the dative case as part of an idiomatic phrase
e)n ske/ph| + genitive ('in cover of', e.g. fear (1.143) or war (7.172, 7.215)), with the sense 'safe from' or 'free from'. It does not occur with the concrete sense implied here of a physical structure or object that provides protection.
Glossae in Herodotum 1.52 uses the headword and the two glosses given here as glosses for a fourth word
e)/lutron, although
Herodotus uses this word, in 1.185-186, only to refer to a large open reservoir.
