*sellhni/enta.
The headword, unattested elsewhere, has the form of a noun or adjective or participle in the accusative masculine singular or neuter plural nominative/accusative. It is most likely a corruption of the near-homonym
selhnh/enta, accusative plural neuter of a hypothetical *
selhnhei/s ('moony', 'moon-like') attested only at Paulus Silentiarius,
Description of the Pulpit 273 (cf. the reading in Suda ms G:
*sellhnh/enta). Alternatively, perhaps a corruption of
*sellh/enta, the accusative form of SellĂȘeis (
sigma 203 =
Hesychius sigma390), the name of a number of rivers, at least one of which is mentioned in
Homer (e.g.
Iliad 2.659; cf.
Strabo 8.3.6, etc.). For a final alternative, the word might be a corruption of a form of the verb
selhnia/w ('act moonstruck') or some other derivative of the noun
selh/nh ('moon'); cf.
Manetho 4.546 (
sehlnio/wnta).
Adler, without explanation, ascribes the entry to the source of the
Lexicon Ambrosianum.
