Headword and gloss are both Late Latin loanwords which entered Greek military vocabulary in Late Antiquity. The term se/deton, from Latin seditum, sedeo, 'to settle down', 'to fix camp', is rare and usually refers to a long-term or permanent military installation or base within Roman or allied territory. Far more widely attested, fossa/ton (phi 624), from Latin fossatum, 'entrenchment', originally signified a temporary marching camp but later came to mean also a generic encampment, regardless of design, size or duration.
