Headword: *sufeo/s
Adler number: sigma,1695
Translated headword: pigsty
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A place where pigs are reared.[1]
It is also called sufew/n.
Agathias [writes]: "if [it is] not absurd to say, the armies of the Romans had remained as if in pigsties and byres."[2]
Greek Original:
*sufeo/s: to/pos o(/pou ai( su/es tre/fontai. le/getai kai\ *sufew/n. *)agaqi/as: ei) mh\ katage/laston ei)pei=n, w(/sper e)n sufew=si kai\ ma/ndrais ta\ tw=n *(rwmai/wn memenh/kei strateu/mata.
Notes:
[1] Same glossing in Photius and other lexica, prompted by Circe's phrase e)/rxeo nu=n sufeo/nde in Homer, Odyssey 10.320.
[2] A loose approximation of Agathias, Histories 5.13 (p. 180 lines 5-6). Agathias does not include ta\ tw=n *(rwmai/wn memenh/kei strateu/mata in the same clause. *ta\ tw=n *(rwmai/wn strateu/mata instead is the subject of the following sentence, and the verb memenh/kei is nowhere to be found, though the participle diamemenhko/ta is present in line 7. Accordingly, the Suda's muddled excerpt alters much of the sense of Agathias.
