[Sardinian sea]; and [sc. also attested is the form] Sardonican sea.
But a Saronic sea [sc. is also attested].[1]
*sardo/nion pe/lagos: kai\ *sardoniko\n pe/lagos. *sarwniko\n de\ pe/lagos.
In English we would naturally say 'Sardinian', but the Greek toponym Sardo (
sigma 130) gave rise to an adjective using, likewise, o(micron).
For the headword phrase see e.g.
Herodotus 1.166.2,
Polybius 1.10.5,
Strabo 2.5.19 (a precise definition).
[1] (Lacking, Adler reports, in mss AF.) Quite different: a.k.a. the Saronic Gulf, between
Athens and the Argolid, and embracing Aegina.
