The addition 'the city' introduces a meaning not clearly attested for this verb elsewhere prior to the Suda, although the more common compound verb peristoixi/zw frequently does have that meaning (also, after the Suda, cf. Pachymeres, Progymnasma 13.1). Use of the present headword to connote 'besieged' in a metaphorical sense (eg. ps.-Chrysostomus 7.47) may derive from the application of the term to the surrounding of hunting prey with nets (cf. Xenophon, Cynegeticus 6.8). The addition of th\n po/lin ("the city") is possibly an error of oral dictation; cf. ps.-Zonaras 1680.23: stoixi/zw de, to\ perikuklw=, di/fqoggon [th\n po/lin ~ di/fqoggon (?)].
