The headword is famously used (in the accusative plural) in Herodotus 7.35.1, where Xerxes deploys "tattooers" or "branders" to punish the unruly Hellespont. But the Suda's gloss here is a neuter noun, suggesting another context, in which the headword noun is an instrument such as an awl or needle; cf. LSJ s.v.
