Headword: *(rwgale/on
Adler number: rho,242
Translated headword: broken, cleft, ragged
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning something which has been] split, torn.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] r(wga/s, [sc. also meaning something which has been] split.[2] "In the [oak tree] there lay a ragged goatherd's pouch, all full of stale bread and meat."[3]
Rule: [adjectives] ending in -aleos come from three parts [of speech]: from a noun deima ["fear"] > deimaleos ["fearful"]; from a verb oidô ["I swell"] > oidaleos ["swollen"]; from an adverb rhimpha ["swiftly"] > rhimphaleos ["swift"]. And they are accented on the penult. [4] The [sc. exceptional instance of] daidaleos ["dappled"], [meaning] variegated, has been noted; also konisaleos ["dusty"].[5]

Notes:
[1] Similarly in other lexica; references at Photius rho202 Theodoridis. The headword, neuter singular of the adjective r(wgale/os, is taken to be quoted from Homer, Iliad 2.417; cf. the scholia there. (Again in Nicander, Theriaca 376, with scholion.)
[2] Grammatically feminine in this instance; see further, next note.
[3] Babrius 1.86, retelling Aesop's fable of the swollen fox; cf. epsilon 1884.
[4] Attributed to Herodian, *peri\ r(hmatikw=n o)noma/twn p. 899 Lentz, and also cited by ps.-Zonaras, Etymologicum Gudianum s.v. a)rgale/os, and Etymologicum Magnum s.v. deimale/os.
[5] konisaleos is mentioned in kappa 2040; and for daidaleos see delta 106. LSJ disobeys the exception in accentuation given here, but follows the accentuation given of daida/leos.
