Notes:
[1] Epic/poetic adverb, similarly glossed in
Hesychius (rho326) and in a scholion on
Homer,
Iliad 6.511, where it occurs (web address 1).
[2]
Greek Anthology 7.202.3-4 (
Anyte), about a rooster; again at
sigma 460. Also see Gow and Page (vol. I, 38), (vol. II, 97), and another extract from this epigram at
epsilon 2933. The poet does not identify the plunderer. But as Gow and Page suggest (ibid.), a likely candidate is the weasel or some other clawed predator in the broader Mustelidae family of carnivorous animals; cf. LSJ s.v.
gale/h (web address 2) and
gamma 29.
