*pepeltwme/na: pepinarwme/na.
Same entry in the
Synagoge,
Lexica Segueriana 336.18 and
Photius pi600 Theodoridis; and cf. the compound
katapepeltwme/na at
Hesychius kappa1324. The headword (otherwise unattested) is -- or rather should be: the syllable
ma has been lost in transmission, as Toup first realised -- the perfect passive participle, neuter nominative plural, of
pelmato/omai ("become worn in the sole"); cf. LSJ s.v.
pelmati/zw II.
The meanings of the lemmata are problematic in all cases. Kuster suggested that the lexical tradition rests upon a misreading of a passage in the
Septuagint,
Joshua 9.5 (not Adler's '9.11'):
kai\ ta\ koi=la tw=n u(podhma/twn au)tw=n kai\ ta\ sanda/lia au)tw=n palaia\ kai\ katapepelmatwme/na e)n toi=s posi\n au)tw=n, kai\ ta\ i(ma/tia au)twn pepalaiwme/na e)pa/nw au)tw=n, kai\ o( a)/rtos au)twn tou= e)pisitismou= chro\s kai\ eu(rwtiw=n kai\ bebrwme/nos ("the sandals on their feet were old and mended, and their garments were worn out upon them"); cf. Gaisford [below] v.2, cols. 2921-2.
[1]
pinaro/omai ("to be dirty") occurs only in these three passages.
