Headword: *paiw=nas
Adler number: pi,881
Translated headword: paeans
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] physicians. And [it can also mean] shouts.
Also [sc. attested is the verb] paiwni/zein ["to sing a paean"], [meaning] to shout.[1]
Greek Original:
*paiw=nas: i)atrou/s. kai\ a)lalagmou/s. kai\ paiwni/zein, to\ a)lala/zein.
Notes:
The headword is accusative plural of the noun paiw/n, which can refer to hymnic paeans, to the healing god Paean and, poetically, to his human counterparts, the physicians (hence the first gloss). Here it has evidently been extracted from somewhere -- perhaps Plato, Symposium 179A, where the scholia have similar material.
For other forms of the same noun see pi 882 through pi 885. For forms of the same word with the variant spelling paia/n, see pi 836 through pi 838, pi 841, and pi 842.
[1] = Synagoge, Photius pi42 Theodoridis; cf. Eudemus 170.2.
