Headword: *parelqei=n
Adler number: pi,535
Translated headword: to come forward
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
In Thucydides the [verb] indicates [something done] at once. But e)pelqei=n [sc. is different], [meaning] to accomplish this by putting it off for a time.[1]
Greek Original:
*parelqei=n: to\ au)ti/ka dhloi= para\ *qoukudi/dh|. to\ de\ e)pelqei=n, to\ a)naballo/menon xro/nw| de\ tou=to diapra/casqai.
Notes:
The headword is the aorist active infinitive corresponding to the verb pare/rxomai, I go by, beside; see LSJ s.v. (and pi 536). It is extracted from the scholia to Thucydides 1.90.5, explaining the difference between parelthein and epelthein; see n.1.
[1] Thucydides 1.90.5 (web address 1) tells how in 479 BCE Themistocles (theta 125) arrived in Sparta as Athenian emissary and, instead of promptly appearing before the authorities, played for time in which the circuit wall of Athens could be rebuilt. The passage does not actually use parelqei=n; it does however use the participle e)lqw/n, and 1.91.4 has e)pelqw/n.
