*parapenqei=s: a)polei=s, e)pi\ ple/on parelku/seis.
The transmitted headword
parapenqei=s, attested only here, is a faulty transcription of
paratenei=s (
you will stretch out alongside, stretch out on the rack, inflict torture), the future indicative active, second person singular, of the verb
paratei/nw; see generally LSJ s.v. and cf. other forms of this verb at
pi 461 and
pi 463. Other lexica correctly transmit
paratenei=s (see next notes), and, as Adler comments in her critical apparatus, this correction would restore the lemma's alphabetical order.
The (correct) headword
paratenei=s must be quoted from somewhere; there are surviving instances in
Menander (
Samia 421 and 544),
Philostratus and
Plotinus.
[1] This gloss is the future indicative active, second person singular, of the verb
a)po/llumi,
I lose, destroy; see generally LSJ s.v. Same gloss elsewhere:
Hesychius pi704;
Timaeus,
Platonic Lexicon pi999a21;
Photius,
Lexicon pi317 Theodoridis. [Adler notes that ms V transmits
a)peilei=s (
you threaten, menace) and ms M inserts
paratenqei/s, an otherwise unattested form, above the lemma.]
[2] The verb form is the same, but from
parelku/w (also
pare/lkw),
I draw along, out; see generally LSJ s.v. The aforementioned entries in
Timaeus and
Photius transmit this same gloss as well.
