The Roman commander of foederati (cf. phi 781) in Numidia, Althias (cf. PLRE IIIa s.v.), stations his detachment of some seventy men at an isolated, but abundant spring outside the city of Tigisis (near modern-day Aïn el-Bordj, Algeria; cf. Barrington Atlas map 31 grid F4), hoping to surprise a vastly superior force of marauding Moors and seize their booty and Libyan captives (535 CE); cf. Kaldellis (218).
