Headword: *pu/rinos po/lemos
Adler number: pi,3220
Translated headword: Fiery War
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The Romans' one fought against the Celtiberians [sc. acquired this name]; for its character and the continuous nature of the engagements were remarkable. Wars in Greece and in Asia are as a rule decided by a single battle, occasionally two, and the battles themselves [are decided by] a single key moment following the initial attack and encounter; but in this war none of the above applied. As a rule it was nightfall which stopped the fighting, with the troops unwilling either to let their morale flag or to succumb to physical fatigue - instead, beginning new initiatives after a rally and recovery; it was winter which put a limit, of sorts, on the war as a whole and the continuous succession of pitched battles. All in all, therefore, if anyone wanted to conceive of a "fiery war", none other than this would come to mind.

Polybius 35.1, on the Celtiberian (cf. kappa 1306) War of 154 BCE. Diodorus Siculus 31.40 has an abbreviated version.
For 'fiery' cf. under alpha 1981. (The adjective in the headword phrase of pi 3221 is identical in form but with a quite different derivation and meaning.)
