Translated headword: equestrian gate
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning the one] through which they had come in.[1]
Homer calls clouds 'heaven's gates'.[2]
Greek Original:
*pu/lh i(pph/latos: di' h(=s ei)selhlu/qeisan. *pu/las ou)ranou= *(/omhros ta\ ne/fh le/gei.
Notes:
LSJ s.v. i(pph/latos lists several phrases which include this adjective, but not the present one. It is in fact attested (but with the word-order reversed) in the comments of grammarians and scholiasts on Homer, Iliad 8.58, where 'all the gates [sc. of Troy] were opened' (web address 1). However, the Suda's gloss -- see next note -- is unparalleled.
[1] The pluperfect tense of this gloss is striking; a specific episode?
[2] From the scholia to Homer, Iliad 5.749 (web address 2).
