Notes:
[1] =
Synagoge pi743, probably from commentary to
Homer's
Odyssey where the headword, a feminine noun in the dative singular, occurs frequently in a formulaic line describing hand-washing (e.g. 1.136, 4.52, 7.172, etc.). For the first gloss (apparently a misinterpretation) see Apollonius Sophistes,
Homeric Lexicon 135.33, and cf.
Hesychius pi4100. For the nominative form of the same noun, see
pi 2937.

Greek Anthology 6.292.5-6 (
Hedylus), also quoted at
kappa 241. The word for 'pitcher' here is not the headword, but an apparently synonymous variant,
proxo/h. On this epigram, Niconoe's tribute to Priapus for her victory in a beauty competition, see Gow and Page (vol. I, 100); (vol. II, 289-290); and further extracts at
alpha 1357,
alpha 1539,
theta 12,
lambda 63,
lambda 468, and
mu 1136. The items she dedicates suggest, as Gow and Page observe (vol. II, 290), that Niconoe might be a Bacchant (cf.
beta 51 through
beta 58). On Niconoe's unexpected dedication to Priapus, see
alpha 1357 note.
