[1] In 113 CE Parthamasiros [Parthamasirus] (?-114 CE) replaced his brother Axidares (cf. alpha 1742, alpha 2806) on the Armenian throne at the instigation of their uncle, King Osroes (cf. alpha 3128) of Parthia (Barrington Atlas map 97; OCD(4) s.v. Parthia; Cassius Dio 68.17-33). The then Roman emperor, Trajan (53-117; OCD(4) s.v.), took affront to the promotion, and the Parthian War ensued. Parthamasiros attempted in 114 to submit to Trajan's authority, but was rebuked, humiliated, dispatched without his original escort, trailed by Roman cavalry under Trajan's orders, and then executed (van den Hout, p. 481).
