[1] Quotation not commented on by Adler but identified by C.Theodoridis (in his
Photius edition, vol.II p.XCI) as a close approximation of
Polybius 3.70.6 (web address 1), on the prelude to the Battle of the River Trebia (now Trebbia, in northern Italy, Barrington Atlas map 39 grid F3; cf. OCD(4) s.v. Trebia). (Theodoridis notes that the standard emendation to
u(pokeime/nwn in
Polybius is therefore otiose.) The individuals concerned are P. Cornelius Scipio (cf. OCD(4) s.v. Cornelius Scipio(1) Publius) and Ti. Sempronius
Longus (cf. Briscoe, p. 49).
[2] Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the
Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable.
