[1] The headword is an uncontracted form, glossed with the contracted form of the same adjective (similarly in Hesychius); cf. the verb at pi 2097. In epic it is used of the sea, of blood ("gushing"), and of battle ("onrushing"); also in reference to the color purple (pi 2096, and see generally LSJ s.v.).
