Greek Original:
*plai/sion: tetra/gwnos ta/cis strateu/matos. kai\ to\ e)k cu/lwn tetragw/nwn ph=gma, o(/ tines plinqi/on kalou=sin. o(po/tan pro\s pa/sas ta\s pleura\s parata/chtai/ tis e(teromh/kei sxh/mati.
Notes:
cf. pi 1775, pi 1778. Modern scholars sometimes refer to this as the 'square' formation, but bricks are rectangular, and when a writer means a square, he has to say so explicitly (for an example, Xenophon, see at pi 1778).
[1] Same or similar material in other lexica (references at Photius pi910 Theodoridis), and cf. the scholia to Thucydides 6.67.1, where the phrase e)n plaisi/w| occurs in his description of a battle-order at Syracuse.
[2] Some of the mss. have a small diagram to illustrate this: a rectangular box containing 12 dots in 4 columns of three.
Keywords: definition; historiography; imagery; military affairs; science and technology; trade and manufacture
