*pi/ssa: o)/noma po/lews. kai\ h( a)/sfaltos.
[1] Otherwise unattested in this -ss- spelling, for which cf. Pelagonion 'Pissaion' (
Polybius 5.108.1) and Phrygian 'Pissia' (Barrington Atlas map 62 grid G5). But in fact, as the parallel entries in other lexica show (e.g.
Etymologicum Magnum 673.13), the name is actually Pisa -- not the Tuscan city of that name but the precursor of
Olympia (
Pausanias 6.22.2, etc.), here in its Doric form.
[2] Pitch or tar; cf.
alpha 4296 and
alpha 470.
