[1] This equivalance -- also in Photius (pi826 Theodoridis) and other lexica -- contradicts the widely accepted equation of the game of petteia with ancient war games (pi 1391, pi 1384), for tabla (tau 7) is a race-game similar to modern tavli or backgammon, and distinct from war games. This entry is used by those who question the identification of petteia with a war game and believe that petteia was a general term for any board game played with pessoi. [2] The use of 'pipes' here is comprehensible only if the same word was sometimes used for the fluted 'towers' (delta 748, pi 1384, tau 7) used to prevent cheating when throwing the dice.
