[1] Also, post-Suda, in Etymologicum Magnum 803.23, where an example is given: the angels appear to the shepherds as they keep watches (sic) over their flocks (Luke 2.8). Whether this was the passage which generated the Suda entry (and any lost precursors of it) may be doubted; a military context seems more likely. In any event, note that a fourfold division of the night was the Roman system; cf. Matthew 14.25 (Christ walks on the sea 'in the fourth watch of the night'). For the Greek world the evidence is conflicting: see the long scholion to Euripides, Rhesus 5, and LSJ s.v. fulakh/ I.4.
