Headword: *frh/n
Adler number: phi,709
Translated headword: midriff, heart, mind
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Nominative frh/n, accusative] fre/na: [meaning] intent/purpose.
Greek Original:
*frh/n, fre/na: dia/noian.
Note:
Likewise or similarly in other lexica (references at Photius phi297 Theodoridis), and cf. also the D scholia to Homer, Iliad 1.107, where the dative plural fresi/ occurs and is glossed with tai=s dianoi/ais. As regards the present entry, it is evidently the accusative singular -- here usurping what in other circumstances would have been a genitive -- that is quoted from somewhere; probably Iliad 2.3, where the D scholia gloss the phrase kata\ fre/na with kata\ th\n dia/noian.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic
