Clement of Alexandria (
Stromata 6.2.19) ascribed this verse to the epic poet Stasinos of
Cyprus (8th or 7th century BCE). The earliest extant citation is given by
Aristotle (
Rhetoric 1376a; 1395a), who referred to it as a proverb (
paroimi/a) or a maxim (
gnw/mh). The verse is also cited under
nu 325, to illustrate the word
nh/pios. Quintus Curtius
Rufus (6.11.20, 8.6.28) cites a Macedonian law or custom by which the blood relatives of those convicted of conspiracy against the king were also to be put to death.
