Translation: Name of a mountain in Lakedaimonia. Also [sc. attested is] Oitaian, [the adjective] from the same mountain.
Greek Original:*oi)/th: o)/noma o)/rous e)n *lakedaimoni/a|. kai\ *oi)tai=os, a)po\ tou= au)tou= o)/rous.
Note:
"Lakedaimonia" is textually sound but must nevertheless, as Gaisford noted, represent an inherited textual corruption. Mt Oita is in central Greece, at the intersection of Ainis,
Doris and Malis. (
Stephanus of
Byzantium s.v.: "Oite, a mountain near Trachis.") The fact that
Doris was the purported homeland of the Lakedaimonioi (Spartans) may lie at the heart of the problem.
