Headword:
*(olko\s
a)/nqrwpos
Adler number: omicron,177
Translated headword: attractive fellow, attractive man
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [Meaning] one who is engaging and seductive.
Greek Original:*(olko\s a)/nqrwpos: o( e(lkustiko\s kai\ e)pagwgo/s.
Notes:
The headword phrase, in the nominative singular, joins the commonplace noun
a)/nqrwpos with the adjective
o(lkos; cf.
omicron 178,
omicron 179, and see generally LSJ s.v. (For the identical noun, see
omicron 175,
omicron 176,
omicron 180.)
The phrase is attested only in lexicography; see already
Photius omicron228 Theodoridis, citing the comparable entry in the
Lexica Segueriana (
Anonymus Antiatticista 111.1) but omitting the same one in
Timaeus,
Platonic Lexicon 997a24. Both
Timaeus and the A.A. add '
Plato in [book] 5 of
Republic'. This presumably means
Republic 521D (web address 1), where however the context is not
attractive human being, but
ma/qhma yuxh=s o(lko/n,
a discipline which attracts the soul. Neither that passage nor further instances of
o(lko/n in 524E and 527B solve the mystery of this lemma.
