*neoxmw/santes: newsti\ kinh/santes. *(hro/dotos.
The headword is aorist infinitive, masculine nominative plural, of the verb
neoxmo/w (for which cf.
nu 223,
nu 225). It has evidently been quoted from somewhere, probably [DW]
Cassius Dio 71.17.1. No such form occurs in the transmitted text of
Herodotus. Nevertheless the reason he is cited here is because the aorist
infinitive neoxmw=sai occurs in
Herodotus 5.19.1, and both that and the
present infinitive
neoxmou=n in 4.201.2 (web address 1 and web address 2 below) are used in the sense of hostile action/innovation "against" (
kata/) an adversary; hence the present gloss "having moved recently [sc. against]", which is a version of what the ancient glosses on
Herodotus 5.19.1 have (
neoxmw=sai: newsti\ kinh=sai).
