Aristophanes [says] that the word is attested in Sophocles, in Electra,[1] signifying a custom. For those who murdered people by treachery, and wanted to turn away [their] wrath, would mutilate [the victim's] limbs, string them together, and hang them around their neck, pulling them through their armpits, and they gave these the name "armpittings". But the word also means the meats from the shoulders that are placed on the thighs in sacrifices of [= to] the gods.

[1] Aristophanes of Byzantium fr. 78 Nauck. This is probably a confusion of e)masxali/sqh, which does occur in Electra (mu 274), with plh/rh masxalisma/twn in Sophocles Troilus fr. 623 Radt: see under epsilon 928.
