The Suda's spelling, Modeeim, occurs also in (e.g.)
1 Maccabees 2:1;
Josephus actually has Modeein (
Jewish War 1.36; cf. the dative in
Jewish Antiquities 13.210); and a range of other spellings are also attested, e.g. Modai, Modein, Modin (see the index to L.H. Feldman's Loeb
Josephus).
Eusebius defines it as a village in the territory of Diospolis (= Lydda). It was the home of the Maccabees.
