Translated headword: Lysimakheia, Lysimacheia, Lysimachea
Vetting Status: high
Translation: Name of a city.
Greek Original:*lusima/xeia: o)/noma po/lews.
Notes:
Though cities of this name are known in
Akarnania (NW Greece),
Aiolis, and elsewhere, the best-known one -- which has probably generated the present entry -- was the one founded by Lysimachos (see OCD(4) s.v., and under
alpha 1862, etc.) as capital for his Thrakian realm. This was on the site of Polis
Agora (present-day Bolayir) in the Thrakian Chersonese, at the neck of land there; Barrington Atlas map 51 grid H3.
Lysimachos joined
Kardia (
kappa 364) and Paktye (see under
pi 33) into his new settlement, the former controlling the head of the Gulf of Saros, the latter controlling the entrance to the Hellespont.
