Adler number: lambda,528
Translated headword: of drinking stones, of porous stones
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Perhaps he[1] is speaking of poroi, which become stronger by drinking the water; alternatively, of [stones] which consume the flesh of the bodies placed on them.[2]
Greek Original:
*li/qwn poti/mwn: mh/pote tw=n pw/rwn le/gei, oi(\ pi/nontes to\ u(/dwr i)sxuro/teroi gi/nontai: h)\ tw=n th\n sa/rka tw=n e)ntiqeme/nwn katanalisko/ntwn swma/twn.
Notes:
Same entry in Photius lambda306 Theodoridis.
[1] Plato, Laws 12.947D (on the construction of a tomb for a Scrutineer), where in fact the reading is in doubt: poti/mwn, as here (and in Photius), or proti/mwn ("superior, choice"). See web address 1.
[2] As already indicated in the headword, the obvious translation of li/qwn poti/mwn -- taking that to be the correct reading -- is "of porous stones". But pw=ros (pi 2181), mentioned here, was in fact a broadbrush term for ordinary, locally-available stones, usually limestone. See generally R.E. Wycherley, The Stones of Athens (Princeton 1978) 270-2.
