Birds 1143, where the Attic-dialect version of the headword appears: 'herons [carried the mortar] in hods'. Again at
lambda 230.
Outside lexicography, the
koine form of the word occurs once in the
Septuagint (
Judges 5.25). The Attic form occurs several times in
Aristophanes:
Birds 840 as well as 1143 (hod);
Clouds 907 and
Wasps 600 (pan). Contrary to the etymology proffered here, the term seems simply to be an expanded form of the Attic noun
le/kos 'pan'.
