[1] Adler suggested Aelian as a possible source of this quotation, but in fact (as a TLG search reveals) it is an approximation of Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Roman Antiquities 3.21.10 (where instead of the Suda's nonsensical and redundant "conducting crowns", the original has "conducting triumphs" (qria/mbous)). The mss. of D.H. share the reading of stefhforei=n ('to wear crowns') with the majority of Suda mss., although that verb is otherwise confined to late/Byzantine Greek. Most modern editions of D.H. accept Bücheler's correction to the synonymous and more common stefanhforei=n, a reading that is attested in Suda ms. F (= Laurentianus 55.1).
