The headword, attested only here, has the typical form of a
nomen agentis ending in
-hths (plural
-htai). Its LSJ entry (web address 1) implicitly links it with another
hapax,
kapa/nia, which
Hesychius kappa687 glosses as
a(rpedo/nes ('cords', 'snares'); hence
kapanh=tai might be 'cord-men' or 'snare-men'. But perhaps a better alternative is to connect it with
kapa/nh, "chariot"; hence, 'chariot-men', though "Chariot-man" is also a likely etymology of the name of the hero Kapaneus.
Also possible is a connection with
skapanh/ths ('digger'); cf. ps.-
Zonaras 1650.
