The headword is an epic contracted form related to katamonh/ ('endurance') that occurs twice in the accusative in Homer's Iliad: 22.257 (web address 1) and 23.661. Most occurrences of the word relate to commentary on those passages.
The present entry takes one side in a debate among ancient scholars as to whether the term referred to victory in single combat or victory that results from katamonh/.
